Situated in the beautiful village of Millers Dale, near Tideswell in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District.
Spacious, beamed, quiet but not too isolated, lovingly maintained, and overlooking some of the most spectacular scenery in the Peak Park, the cottages are situated where Millers Dale meets Monks Dale - a conservation area of outstanding natural beauty, renowned for its excellent walking with a network of paths leading directly from the door. There are paths of all grades from very easy to more challenging past towering limestone cliffs and along peaceful rivered dales. Our farm trail leads to a ridge walk with views of 7 dales.
A leafy lane of 300 metres leads down to the small hamlet of Millers Dale, nestling beneath woods on the banks of the River Wye. As the name suggests there used to be a corn mill driven by a water wheel on the river. The wheel can still be seen beside the old miller's cottage built in 1740 by the tiny church of St Ann.
Here can also be found the Anglers Rest pub, serving real ale and good food. From here stroll by the side of the river, see trout jumping and water voles, to the water fowl sanctuary in the delightfully named Water-Cum-Jolly Dale.
We are just two miles from the Cathedral of the Peak in the quaint historic market town of Tideswell.
The Accommodation
Our cottages are collectively called Monks Retreat because from the 12th to 15th century there was a monastery on this site. They comprise: Monks Memories (sleeping 2), Friars Folly (sleeping 4) and Abbots Abode (sleeping 6) - all ETC rated 4 star.

Monks Memories sleeps 2. It is single storey having a double bedroom with en suite bathroom with bath and shower over.The fully fitted kitchen has an electric cooker, fridge, microwave etc. and laundry facilities are available in a well equipped communal laundry room. The comfortable sitting room has a TV and DVD and a dining area with views overlooking the gardens.
The entire cottage has been lovingly restored to maintain its rustic charm while offering all the amenities for modern day comfort with oil-fired central heating throughout and additional log burning and flame-effect stove in the sitting room.

Friars Folly sleeps 4 and is the middle cottage of the three. It has an entrance lobby, a fitted kitchen with fridge, microwave, electric cooker etc. and a dining area. A rustic pole supports the dark oak beam in the lounge. Windows with window seats and limestone lintels look out over the gardens to the hills beyond. Between the alcoves stands a cast iron stove and TV and DVD.
From the lounge a three stage staircase gives access to the landing for the two bedrooms, one a double with luxury iron bedstead and one twin. Both bedrooms have very old oak beams and trusses preserved in their medieval state and also off the landing is the bathroom with bath, power shower, toilet, wash basin and more beams.
Outside you will find garden furniture, pergolas, picnic table and barbecue for your use.

Abbots Abode sleeps 4 + 2 children and is the largest of the Monks Retreat cottages. It has a large dining kitchen with fitted units, electric cooker, fridge/freezer. dishwasher, microwave oven etc. at one side and an oak dining table and chairs at the other with a peninsular unit in between. In this split level cottage you go down three steps into the spacious sitting room which has a low beamed ceiling and large window giving views over the garden to the hills beyond. The cosy feel is completed by a cast iron stove and TV and DVD.
A short staircase leads to a twin bedded room with superb views down the length of Monksdale. This room has enormous oak trusses and a short ladder leads to a gallery where there are two single beds.The double bedroom also has huge beams, a luxury iron bedstead and wonderful views of Millers Dale. The bathroom has a bath with shower over and a washbain and toilet.
The garden has plenty of space to sit outside and there is a secluded patio with barbecue and garden furniture by the cottage.
Each of the cottages is individual in character and maintains its own privacy but together they make an ideal base for a larger party or group of familes and the dining area in Abbots Abode is large enough for the whole of such a group to relax over a meal together.
Each cottage has the use of a separate fully - equipped laundry area so that clothes can be washed and dried without the noise or steam spoiling the comfort of your cottage.
Cots, high chairs and stair gates can be supplied to ensure young children can enjoy their stay in comfort and safety.
